Trump Calls for Jailing of Windy City Leader and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Arrive in Metropolis

Former President Donald J. Trump on midweek called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"The city's leader should be jailed for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic party.

These remarks coincide with the arrival of state military personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the current government, notwithstanding strong objections from Illinois authorities including the governor and mayor.

"This represents yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have a Black man unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I am staying put."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, stating: "I will not back down. Trump is now demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What remains on the path to full-blown autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 50 miles from the city, as the administration advances with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden hellhole", despite police data indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, such as murders.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the region, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard forces readying for deployment, per sources. Authorities indicated the soldiers would avoid police functions but would protect ICE officers and their facilities.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with Texas national guard insignia were spotted at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Vehicles marked "Disaster Relief" delivered sanitation facilities and other supplies. Mobile units were set up in rows. Additional fencing was installed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities ordered flight restrictions over the military base for security reasons until early December.

Federal authorities has intensified immigration enforcement in the city in recent weeks, triggering protests, especially near an processing facility in Broadview.

Earlier this week, state and city initiated legal action targeting the administration, seeking to block the military dispatch, urging a federal judge to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "unlawful and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is set for the next day.

The mayor also issued an executive order on that day prohibiting federal immigration agents and others from using city-owned property as operation bases for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has charged the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "pawns".

At a news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and make acceptable the deployment of military personnel under his personal authority."

The historic federal law limits the military's role in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has said he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which allows a president to dispatch active duty military in states that are unable to put down an uprising or are resisting national authority.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has sent or mentioned deploying troops to over ten cities, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is necessary to combat crime and defend immigration agents.

Data shows that most violent crime nationwide has declined in recent years. In Chicago, for instance, murders were reduced nearly one-third to under three hundred through August, per law enforcement reports.

A recent poll published on that day revealed that most Americans oppose the deployment of military forces without an external threat.
