The United Kingdom and the United States have secured a significant trade agreement that will preserve no import taxes on UK drug products entering the US market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to increase spending on medicines through the National Health Service (NHS). This move guarantees that tariffs on these vital exports will remain at nothing for a period of three years.

This development comes after previous statements to significantly raise duties on patented pharmaceutical products, with increases floated reaching 100%.

"This agreement with the UK bolsters the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and establishes much-needed fairness to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," a release said.

Commercial Importance

Drugs constitute one of the Britain's largest export categories to the US, which is clearly the biggest buyer for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data show that in the year to the end of the third quarter, the UK sold pharmaceutical products worth £11.1bn to the US. This amount accounted for 17.4% of British export trade in that period.

"This guarantee protects work, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to establish itself as a global hub for medical research," a minister stated.

Detailed NHS Changes

The deal includes several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it judges new therapies to be prohibitively costly by 25%.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a target to raise overall health service expenditure on treatments from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The sum drug companies must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be limited at fifteen percent. In the past, refunds exceeded 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact takes place against a long-running row between the drug companies and the ministers over medicine costs and regulatory access.

These tensions were intensified by arguments that American customers were charged significantly more for the identical medicines than patients in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several major drug company projects in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while major funding commitments have been directed toward American operations.

A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS must invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a share of its total funding over the last ten years.
