Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He was on the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
