Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Release
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of files that included little new information.
