The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
